The Kent Pledge was first introduced in 2015. It recognises that being care experienced can be challenging, and sets out what KCC and its workers will do, as corporate parents, to help make sure every young person has the best possible experience while they’re in care. The Pledge is built around six themes:
- Feeling a sense of belonging
- Having an adult who is always there for you while you’re in care
- Getting a good education
- Building good memories for the future
- Preparing for adulthood
- Standing up for your needs and interests
Recently, young people and practitioners have highlighted that not everyone is as familiar with the Pledge as they once were. Because of this, the Children in Care Councils challenged their Corporate Parents to make sure every young person knows about the Kent Pledge and how it supports them.
Working closely with children and young people, the Virtual School Kent Participation Team has:
- Updated and redesigned the Kent Pledge Card Packs, creating one simple and accessible set to share with young people.
- Refreshed the full text of the Kent Pledge.
- Created a short animation explaining the Pledge and its six themes.
